Oscar Nominees 2013 awards

The lead up to the Oscars this year was extremely exciting with no one knowing what the outcome would be. That wait is over however as the nominations were announced by Emma Stone, the star in the new film Gangster Squad and Seth McFarlane.

The nominations got underway with the category of ‘Best Picture’. No real surprises here however, the Bond film; Skyfall didn’t manage to make the cut. Something perhaps many of us were not expecting. The nominations for Best Picture 2013 were;

New film Lincoln, a story about the American President during the Civil War, struggling with carnage on the battlefield whilst trying to liberate slaves. The film was released in February in the UK and lead the nominations with an impressive tally of 12. Life of Pi however wasn’t far behind, coming in close second with a tally of 11. Amour managed to grab 5.

The category of ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ saw some records broken as the nomination list sees some of the oldest and youngest ever nominees in the history of the award. Emmanuelle Riva from Amour aged 85 was up against Quvenzhane Wallis, age 9 from the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. The rest of the list included actresses Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook and Naomi Watts from The Impossible.

The same category for the opposite sex, ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ saw some amazing nominations come in for the award. They consisted of Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Jaoquin Phoenix (The Master) and Denzel Washington (Flight). Daniel Day Lewis in the end won the battle and took home the award.

The fight for Best Director however was something else as Ang Lee, the director of Life of Pi was considered. He had a tremendous success with the film despite the fact that he had no big name actors in the cast. Steven Spielberg, as always, was also a favourite with his film Lincoln. Despite the success both directors had they still faced tough competition from a number of other directors. David O. Russell with Silver Linings Playbook, Michael Haneke for Armour and Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Despite the competition it was Ang Lee who walked away with the award.
